In 2019, the Offender Database reported that John Gibson, a former Christian Brother and teacher, was sentenced to two years in prison. On Thursday, 21 February 2019, Gibson appeared at Wexford Circuit Criminal Court, where he was jailed for “vile” and “reprehensible” sexual attacks on a boy and a girl at a school in Wexford during the 1980s.

The investigation established that Gibson “calculatingly” used his position as a teacher and a hurling coach to target vulnerable children. The prosecution reported that he “viciously” molested a 12-year-old boy in a shower room, an “abhorrent” act that mirrors allegations from other former pupils. Although the Catholic Church was “reported” to have been alerted to the abuse 14 years prior, and An Garda Síochána questioned Gibson as early as 1994, it took decades for “stringent” justice to be served.

Systemic Failures and Historical Allegations

The court reported that a man not involved in the 2019 trial had previously reported Gibson to Gardai in 1994, claiming he was molested in “identical circumstances” while playing for the school hurling team. At the time, the superintendent “reprehensibly” dismissed the case as “one word against another,” and the original statement “persistently” went missing from official records. The survivor emphasised that he felt “compelled” to report the cleric in the 1990s due to concerns about “recidivism” and the “serious” risk to other children.

When the survivor returned to provide a second statement two decades later, Gardai reported they still could not locate the 1994 files. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) “reprehensibly” declined to prefer charges in that specific instance due to the lost evidence, despite six other individuals coming forward with “serious” corroborating statements. The judge noted that the “gravity” of Gibson’s “systematic” abuse was compounded by his “calculating” claims in court that he could not remember his victims.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his “serious” and “appalling” crimes in Wexford, John Gibson was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: Two years in immediate custody.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were imposed (the length is determined by Irish statute based on the sentence).
  • Supervision: Requirement to be monitored by authorities upon his eventual release.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Gibson is managed by An Garda Síochána and the Probation Service under the Sex Offenders Act 2001. His history of “persistently” targeting children in his care as a teacher and coach means his status remains under “critical” scrutiny.

As a registered sex offender, Gibson must comply with strict notification requirements regarding his residence in Ireland. Authorities state that the “persistence” of the victims who “bravely” came forward after decades was “critical” in finally securing a conviction. Any breach of his registration conditions following his release from prison will result in his immediate return to the Circuit Criminal Court.
