In 2019, the Offender Database reported that James Prytherch, then 33, of Cheviot Avenue, St Helens, Merseyside, was sentenced to six years in prison. On Friday, 8 November 2019, Prytherch was jailed at Liverpool Crown Court after admitting to a “reprehensible” campaign of grooming and sexual abuse against a 14-year-old schoolgirl.

The investigation established that Prytherch, a delivery driver and father of children, used Snapchat to target the girl during the summer holidays. Their conversations became “persistently” sexualised, involving the exchange of intimate photographs and links to pornographic material. Prytherch “calculatingly” collected the girl in his delivery van and drove her to secluded locations for sexual activity, which eventually culminated in unprotected intercourse.

Judicial Findings and Deception

The court reported that Prytherch had “sinisterly” deceived the child, claiming he lived in shared accommodation and even discussing giving her a key, when he was actually living with his partner and family. The abuse was uncovered after the girl confided in a friend, leading to the intervention of school staff, social services, and Merseyside Police. Judge Garrett Byrne emphasised that Prytherch had been motivated solely by his own “sexual gratification” and gave no thought to the “devastating” emotional consequences for the victim.

The prosecution emphasised that Prytherch attempted to monitor the girl’s actions even as she spoke with a social worker, becoming concerned when he realised she was taking screenshots of his messages. Despite having no previous convictions, his “systematic” exploitation of a child less than half his age resulted in a significant custodial sentence. Prytherch pleaded guilty to 16 sexual offences committed between July and September 2019.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his “abhorrent” crimes in St Helens, Merseyside, James Prytherch was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: Six years in immediate custody.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements for life.
  • SHPO: An indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order to monitor his conduct and digital access.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Prytherch is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Merseyside Police. His history of “persistent” grooming and the use of a delivery vehicle to facilitate sexual abuse means his status remains under “critical” scrutiny.

As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, Prytherch must comply with strict notification requirements regarding his address on Cheviot Avenue, St Helens. Authorities state that his indefinite SHPO is a necessary tool to protect children from his predatory reach. Any breach of his registration conditions or his digital monitoring terms following his release will result in his immediate return to Liverpool Crown Court.
