In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Alan Knight, then 47, of Stroud Road, Gloucester, was sentenced to four years in prison at Cardiff Crown Court. Knight pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a child following a grooming campaign that spanned several months.

The investigation established that Knight, who was then 46, met a 15-year-old girl on Snapchat. To facilitate the grooming, he lied about his age—claiming to be 30—and used the alias “Alan Smith.” The prosecution reported that Knight targeted the victim due to her low self-esteem, using gifts such as a teddy bear, jewellery, and chocolates to build her confidence and make her feel “infatuated.”

Grooming and Travelodge Incidents

The court heard that Knight regularly drove from Gloucester to Rhondda Cynon Taf on Sunday afternoons to take the girl out in his car. In early 2018, these trips escalated to sexual abuse in isolated areas and visits to a Travelodge at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol.

  • Deception: The girl told her parents she was visiting a friend while Knight checked them into the hotel.
  • Coercion: Knight bought the 15-year-old alcohol and engaged in sexual activity, including the use of a sex toy, during a visit around Valentine’s Day.

The matter was uncovered after school friends became concerned about the age disparity and informed a teacher, who reported the situation to the police.

Impact and Judicial Comments

In a victim impact statement, the girl—who was 17 at the time of sentencing—reported feeling “sick” when thinking about the incidents. She described struggling with anxiety, flashbacks, and a loss of concentration that affected her A-level studies.

Judge Michael Fitton QC noted the significant age difference and the high degree of planning involved in Knight’s grooming behaviour. Although Knight had a previous caution for battery in 2008, he had no prior convictions for sexual offences.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his crimes in Wales and Bristol, Alan Knight was handed the following:

  • Custodial Sentence: Four years in immediate custody.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were imposed as a result of his conviction.
  • Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO): A 10-year order restricting his activities and contact.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Knight is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Gloucestershire Constabulary. His history of using digital platforms and physical gifts to manipulate a minor remains under “critical” scrutiny.

As a registered sex offender, Knight must comply with strict notification requirements regarding his address and digital devices. South Wales Police and Gloucestershire Constabulary state that they will continue to monitor his compliance with the SHPO to protect the public. Any breach of his registration conditions or his 10-year order will result in his immediate return to Cardiff Crown Court.
