In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Daniel Odubanjo, then 27, of King Avenue, Clapham, was sentenced to six years in prison at Chelmsford Crown Court. Following a British Transport Police (BTP) investigation, Odubanjo was convicted of one count of false imprisonment and two counts of sexual assault.
The investigation established that the offences occurred on 29 November 2024, on board a train service travelling from Shenfield to Chelmsford. Odubanjo first targeted a 21-year-old woman by trapping her inside a train toilet cubicle. He pushed her back into the facilities, locked the door, and subjected her to sexual assault. Despite her attempts to escape and scream for help, he pulled her back into the cubicle until she lied about her age to secure her release.
Sequential Attack and Arrest
Minutes after the first attack, Odubanjo targeted a 17-year-old girl boarding the same service. He sat opposite her, asked inappropriate questions, and exposed himself. After she moved to sit near other passengers for safety, Odubanjo followed her and committed a second sexual assault.
The court reported the following timeline:
- Shenfield to Chelmsford: First victim trapped and assaulted in the toilet.
- Chelmsford Station: First victim reported the incident to staff.
- Chelmsford to Hatfield Peverel: Second victim targeted and assaulted.
- Hatfield Peverel Station: BTP officers met the train and arrested Odubanjo at the scene.
Sentence and Registration Requirements
For his crimes in Essex, Daniel Odubanjo was:
- Sentenced to six years in prison.
- Ordered to pay a victim surcharge.
- Subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
- Placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
The SHPO specifically prohibits Odubanjo from being under the influence of any substance while on public transport, at stations, or on Network Rail property. BTP Detective Sergeant Hayley Whyte commended the bravery of the victims and the bystanders who intervened during the second attack.
Monitoring and Public Protection
Odubanjo is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by the British Transport Police. His status and his residency in Clapham remain under scrutiny.
As a member of the Sex Offenders Register, Odubanjo must comply with notification requirements for the duration of his sentence and beyond. British Transport Police state that they take every report of sexual offences seriously and will take swift action to ensure offenders face justice. Any breach of his SHPO or registration conditions will result in his return to Chelmsford Crown Court.
