In 2019, the Offender Database reported that A former Tynwald clerk who confessed to indecent exposure to a minor has been granted leniency and avoided incarceration.
Thomas St John Neville Bates, aged 75, received an eight-month suspended sentence at Douglas Courthouse.
Bates was additionally registered as a sex offender for a duration of 10 years and mandated to pay £500 in fees.
The attorney had admitted guilt to a charge of gross indecency with a minor under the age of 16 during a prior hearing.
The offence occurred on July 3 of the previous year.
In delivering the punishment, Deemster Kainth stated that Bates’s conduct was “opportunistic” rather than “premeditated”.
Bates functioned as a legal consultant to the Manx parliament in his previous position as clerk of Tynwald from 1987 until 2001.
His position entailed serving as the secretary to the House of Keys and as counsel to the Speaker.
