In 2025, the Offender Database reported that Wyll Burling, then 22, of Cardrew Terrace, Redruth, Cornwall, was sentenced at Truro Magistrates’ Court for the sexual penetration of a horse. Burling had previously pleaded guilty to the “vile” offence on Thursday, 14 August 2025, before appearing for his final hearing.
The “serious” incident occurred on Sunday, 28 January 2024, in Redruth. Burling was charged under Section 69 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, which specifically prohibits intentional sexual penetration of a living animal. The court reported that Burling intentionally performed an act of penetration on a horse, knowing or being reckless as to the nature of the act.
Sentencing and Community Order
On Tuesday, 23 September 2025, Burling was handed a 12-month community order. This sentence, which is set to end in September 2027, includes “serious” requirements designed to address his behaviour:
- Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR): Burling must participate in up to 40 days of activities as directed by his responsible officer.
- Mandatory Appointments: He is required to attend all appointments with the probation service or nominated individuals.
- Financial Penalties: The court ordered Burling to pay £556.57 in compensation and a £200 fine.
The judge emphasised that Burling’s early guilty plea was taken into account during sentencing. Because compensation was prioritised, the court did not order additional costs or a victim surcharge.
Monitoring and Public Protection
Burling is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Devon & Cornwall Police. His residency in Redruth, Cornwall, and his behaviour in the community remain under “serious” scrutiny during the term of his community order.
As part of his supervision, specialist officers will monitor Burling to ensure compliance with his 40-day rehabilitation requirement. Devon & Cornwall Police emphasise that offences of this nature are a “serious” violation of animal welfare and public decency. Any breach of his community order or further “vile” behaviour will result in Burling being returned to Truro Magistrates’ Court for a potential custodial sentence.
