In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Ian Walpole, 43, a former Humberside Police Inspector previously based in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, was sentenced for “vile” and “sickening” child sex offences. Walpole appeared at Lincoln Crown Court on Friday, 16 January 2026, following an investigation that revealed he had betrayed his professional oath to protect the vulnerable.

The criminal investigation began in July 2024 after another police force flagged Walpole. Upon his arrest, his electronic devices were seized and forensically examined, uncovering a collection of indecent images of children. In June 2025, Walpole “dishonestly” initially faced four charges but ultimately pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.

Abuse of Position and Gross Misconduct
In parallel with the criminal case, a “serious” internal misconduct investigation was launched. It was reported that Walpole had also been sharing confidential information from police systems. Although he resigned in January 2025, an accelerated Misconduct Hearing in March 2025 concluded that he would have been dismissed for Gross Misconduct had he still been in post.

Deputy Chief Constable Sarah Baker emphasised that Walpole’s actions were “appalling” and “inexcusable,” noting that crimes involving children deeply undermine the trust the public places in the police. She reported that the force is committed to “rooting out” anyone who breaks the law, regardless of their rank.

Sentencing and Public Protection
Despite the “serious” nature of his crimes, Walpole was handed a six-month suspended prison sentence. As part of his punishment, he must complete 100 hours of unpaid work. The court also imposed:

  • A five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to restrict his digital access and behaviour.
  • A 10-year notification period on the Sex Offenders Register.

As a result of his conviction for making indecent images of children, Ian Walpole is now managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Humberside Police and Lincolnshire Police. This ensures his activities in Grimsby, Lincoln, and the surrounding areas are strictly monitored. Any breach of his SHPO or further “vile” conduct will result in his immediate arrest and the activation of his prison sentence.
