In 2009, the Offender Database reported that Ashton Kerr, then 27, of Selby, North Yorkshire, was jailed for three years following a “sickening” and “cruel” campaign of physical violence against a three-year-old boy. Appearing at York Crown Court, the unemployed Kerr demonstrated a complete lack of remorse, reportedly smirking in the dock as his “awful” crimes were detailed to the court.

The prosecution emphasised that Kerr subjected the vulnerable child to a “catalogue of abuse” over a period of time. This included stubbing out a cigarette on the boy’s body, beating him with a strap, and raining punches upon him. A medical report reported that “extensive force” would have been required to inflict the injuries found on the child, which were caused by fists, straps, and blunt objects.

Sentencing and Neglect Charges
Kerr admitted to charges of causing actual bodily harm. His partner, Tammie Timbrell, then 24, of Kitchener Street, Selby, North Yorkshire, was also sentenced for her role in the case. She pleaded guilty to child neglect for witnessing the “vile” attacks without intervening to protect the child. Timbrell was handed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

The Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst, emphasised the “serious nature” of the injuries and condemned Kerr’s remorseless attitude. The court heard that the child was left with “very cruel” injuries, and the judge noted that Kerr had shown very little insight into the “vicious” impact of his behaviour.

As a result of his conviction for child abuse and ABH, Ashton Kerr was managed by North Yorkshire Police and the probation service upon his eventual release. Any future “serious” concerns regarding his proximity to children or his behaviour in Selby and the wider North Yorkshire area will result in strict intervention. Cases of this nature are often subject to a serious case review to ensure that safeguarding agencies in North Yorkshire can prevent similar “cruel” occurrences.

WARNING

Ashton Kerr is now living in Scunthorpe, currently staying in the back stairwell of the multi-storey car park in the town centre, and has a push bike. To bear in mind: since the photo, he’s gained weight, is short, has a beard, and a bobble hat.
