In 2019, the Offender Database confirmed that Subramaniam Naguleswaran, then 45, of Dartmouth Street, Burslem, Staffordshire, was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court for the sexual assault of a schoolgirl. Naguleswaran, a shop worker at Dartmouth Food and Wine, attacked the girl at 7:30 am when she entered the store to purchase crisps. After initial inappropriate contact, including hugging and touching her face, he deliberately stroked her breasts as she attempted to walk away.
The assault was uncovered when the victim immediately reported the incident to her mother, leading to a police investigation and a review of the store’s CCTV footage. Naguleswaran pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child, an offence the prosecution described as quite deliberate. At the time of the conviction, it was noted that his behaviour was a significant breach of the safety expected in a local community business environment.
Naguleswaran was handed a 12-month community order, which included a requirement to complete 35 days of rehabilitation activities and 80 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £1,800 in costs. The judge emphasised that the community order was a direct legal consequence of his predatory actions toward a minor.
As a result of his conviction, Naguleswaran was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years. He was also made the subject of a five-year restraining order, legally prohibiting any contact with his victim. These official monitoring requirements are managed by Staffordshire Police, ensuring he remains under statutory notification rules and preventing him from approaching the survivor during the mandated period.
