In January 2026, the Offender Database reported that Melvyn Peter Brown, 60, previously of Northampton, Northamptonshire, was sentenced to 15 years in prison at Northampton Crown Court. Brown carried out a horrific campaign of sexual abuse against a girl over 11 years, beginning when she was just five years old and continuing until she was 16.

The court heard that the paedophile groomed the victim for years, first raping her when she was approximately 10 years old. The abuse was reported to police late last year, leading to a complex investigation by the Northamptonshire Police SOLAR Team. Brown admitted to seven offences during the legal proceedings but was found guilty by a jury of a further nine counts following a four-hour deliberation. His convictions included sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, assault by penetration, sexual activity in the presence of a child, and multiple counts of indecent assault and sexual touching.

Lead investigator Detective Sergeant Chelsea Noble praised the survivor for her “immense bravery” and “extraordinary courage” throughout the investigation. The judge noted that Brown’s crimes were truly terrible and had a lasting impact on the victim’s life. During the trial, it was highlighted that the abuse only ceased when the victim reached the age of 16, representing more than a decade of systematic exploitation.

On January 5, 2026, Melvyn Peter Brown was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for the 16 offences. The sentencing judge emphasised that the length of the term was necessary to reflect the gravity and duration of the abuse. Lead Investigator Noble stated that the sentence ensures Brown is now “where he belongs,” providing a measure of justice for the survivor.

As a result of his convictions for the rape and prolonged sexual abuse of a child, Brown has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. He is managed under the highest level of Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) in Northamptonshire. Upon his eventual release, he will be subject to a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which strictly prohibits him from any contact with children and places permanent restrictions on his residency and internet activity.
