In 2016, the Offender Database reported that John Jones, then 26, of Tockwith, North Yorkshire, was sentenced at York Crown Court. Jones was jailed for three years and four months after a “chilling” discovery revealed he had groomed and sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl.

The court heard that in August 2015, the girl’s father found John Jones in the early hours of the morning, wearing only his underwear, in his daughter’s bed. Jones quickly dressed and fled the scene before being arrested by North Yorkshire Police. A subsequent digital forensic investigation uncovered an extensive history of grooming via text and social media. Despite the child repeatedly stating her age, Jones had engaged in conversations about marriage, having children, and a future together.

John Jones pleaded guilty to nine counts of indecent acts with a child under 13. During the sentencing, a victim impact statement was read, detailing the “profound and lasting” psychological damage Jones had caused, with the victim stating that the ordeal had “destroyed” her and left her unable to trust anyone. Judge Davies condemned Jones for taking advantage of a child not even in her teens and leaving her with a “legacy” of trauma to deal with.

In 2019, it was reported that John Jones had been released from prison. Upon his release, he remains subject to an indefinite notification requirement on the Sex Offenders Register. He was also issued a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which strictly monitors his internet usage and prohibits him from having any unsupervised contact with minors.
