In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Sussex Police officer, Daniel Barnes, a Horsham Paedophile Sex Offender, found in possession of abhorrent, obscene photographs of minors being raped, tortured, and murdered, was NOT sent to prison.

Daniel Barnes was a current Bognor town councillor at the time the police discovered the images.

The then 40-year-old was admitted to six charges earlier in December, including the possession of 185 indecent pictures.

Daniel Barnes, residing on Storrington Road in Thakeham, Horsham, West Sussex, downloaded the pictures while serving as a police officer, a court was informed.

In December, Daniel Barnes entered a guilty plea to the subsequent charges at Worthing Magistrates’ Court.

  • Make an indecent photograph of a child: one category A image (the most serious category)
  • Make indecent photographs of a child: four category B images
  • Make indecent photographs of a child: 180 category C images
  • Possess a prohibited image of a child: 23 images
  • Distribute an indecent image of a child: three category C images
  • Possess an extreme pornographic image involving an animal: five images, according to the lists

During the hearing, District Judge Amanda Kelly stated that, notwithstanding his viewing of photographs of children, the charges were exceedingly grave.

She stated, “Actual children have endured the most horrific and despicable abuse.”

The case was referred to Portsmouth Crown Court for sentencing, where judges had enhanced authority.

Judge Roger Herthington, however, today opted against incarcerating the former police officer, sending a clear message that Sussex Police, or anyone in public office, do NOT have to adhere to higher standards than the public.

The court revealed that Daniel Barnes, now residing in the Cambridgeshire region, received a 12-month community order.

He was additionally mandated to perform community service and participate in rehabilitation sessions.

Daniel Barnes was instructed to register as a sex offender for a duration of five years.
