Back in 2009, a suspended sentence was handed to John William McConaghy, the Dervock Paedophile, deemed too fat to go to jail in a true Irish farce.

In December 2009, Ballicastle Gospel Hall church elder John William McConaghy, also referred to as Jack, received a sentence of two-and-a-half years for multiple sexual assaults on a young girl, commencing when she was merely 10 years old; however, the prison term was suspended for three years due to the judge’s determination that he was too fat to serve time.

Judge David Smyth mandated that the morbidly obese paedophile from Urbal Road in Dervock, Co Antrim, pay £10,000, citing the “wholly exceptional circumstances” pertaining to his weight as the reason for John William McConaghy’s release.

The statement incited indignation, especially when John William McConaghy upheld his innocence during his 10-day trial, compelling his victim to testify and recount the harrowing specifics of the torture she endured for more than eight years.

She said in court that throughout the years she had “a greater than fifty per cent likelihood of being groped on my breasts or having a hand inserted under my skirt” by the former church leader.

The abuse ceased when she was around 18, following an incident in which she retaliated and scratched the face of the older perpetrator, John William McConaghy.

John William McConaghy was heard to sing some strange, high-pitched, nonsensical rhyme as he “skipped” out of court.

He has to be dead by now, surely?
