The Rotherham Paedophile, Paul Richardson, who seduced and subsequently assaulted a teenager two decades ago has been convicted of five sexual crimes on 24 July.

Paul Richardson, 63, from Rotherham, exploited a 15-year-old girl at hotels in South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire following a period of grooming, as shown in Sheffield Crown Court.

In 2005, when Paul Richardson was 42 years old and the girl was 15, he escorted her to a theatre and subsequently to a hotel in Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire. Richardson provided the girl with alcohol at the hotel. He subsequently commenced kissing her.

During interviews with National Crime Agency (NCA) investigators, the victim, now in her 30s, stated that she repeatedly expressed her refusal for Paul Richardson to kiss her; yet, Richardson persisted and subsequently raped her.

In the subsequent months, Paul Richardson sexually assaulted the girl three further times.

He transported her to a hotel in Rotherham, where he initially attempted to rape her and subsequently succeeded in raping her. On a separate occasion, over a span of two days, he sexually assaulted the girl twice at a residence in Nottinghamshire.

The victim recounted that Paul Richardson would get her in his vehicle—occasionally from school—and transport her to locations where she was thereafter alone with him.

Whenever the victim expressed her disinterest in engaging in sexual activity, Paul Richardson either overpowered or persuaded her.

A trial at Sheffield Crown Court revealed that Paul Richardson was aware of the girl’s tumultuous family environment and deliberately sought to instill a sense of need in her for stability, so discouraging her from reporting the abuse. He threatened that if she disclosed their relationship to anyone, she would lose him and be left alone.

In 2022, officials from Operation Stovewood, the NCA’s investigation into historical accusations of sexual abuse in Rotherham, reached out to the victim whom they suspected had been sexually assaulted.

The victim disclosed the abuse to specially-trained detectives and presented them with a phone that Paul Richardson had given her throughout her childhood for the purpose of clandestinely contacting him. Officers extracted many communications from the phone, a significant number of which were sexual texts from Richardson to the girl.

Subsequently, officers apprehended Paul Richardson and indicted him in March 2024.

Paul Richardson has been ordered to appear at Sheffield Crown Court for sentencing on 21 August.
