The Whitehaven Rapist, Callum Johnstone, who sexually assaulted and raped a severely intoxicated 16-year-old girl has been incarcerated by a judge who characterised his conduct as “predatory.”

Callum Johnstone, 29, of Earls Road, Whitehaven, was under the influence of drink and cocaine when he escorted the teenager to a park and “exploited” her, as presented told Carlisle Crown Court.

Callum Johnstone was convicted of rape and assault in relation to the August 2022 incident and was sentenced on Friday to six years and six months in imprisonment.

In sentencing, Judge Nicholas Barker told Callum Johnstone: “I am satisfied that you behaved in a predatory manner towards her that night. You were 26, she was an extremely drunk 16-year-old girl.”

The court heard Callum Johnstone had earlier sat for a prolonged period with the girl in a Whitehaven bar.

CCTV showed her at times resting her head on a table and then stumbling on a dance floor.

Judge Barker said a bystander warned Callum Johnstone off the girl, but he instead followed her from the bar and took her to a nearby park by “guiding her, or at least holding her up” on the way.

“I am satisfied that the only reason that you were sat there with her [in the bar] was because you harboured a sexual interest towards her,” Judge Barker added.

As he read out the girl’s victim impact statement, prosecutor Tim Evans told the court she was “scared throughout that no one would believe her” about the assault.

“I know what I felt. I know how scary it was,” she said in her statement.

“It’s always going to be in my mind, no matter how much I try to distract myself.”

The girl’s mother described the family being left “broken”, with their lives “changed completely”.

She said: “I doubt I will ever get my funny, loving daughter back.

“But if this experience gives just some people the courage to speak out about rape and sexual assault, and report it, then hopefully our awful experience will not have been wasted.”

Callum Johnstone has been added to the sex offenders register indefinitely and barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.
