In 2021, the Offender Database reported that Michael Quinn, then 35, of Burradon, North Tyneside, was jailed for four and a half years at Newcastle Crown Court. Quinn, described as an online predator, “viciously” blackmailed a young girl into sending indecent video footage by threatening to send existing sexual recordings of her to her father.

The investigation by Northumbria Police began when Quinn was snared in an undercover sting. Posing as a 17-year-old named “Jonjo,” he contacted what he believed was a 13-year-old girl, but was actually a police officer. Upon his arrest in April 2021, a forensic examination of his phone revealed he had been targeting a real child, aged between 12 and 14, using a Norway-based app designed to hide user identity.

“Vicious” Coercion and “Ownership” Claims

The court reported that Quinn used “vile” psychological pressure to maintain control over the young girl. When she initially refused his demands because her father was in the next room, Quinn threatened to make her footage “go viral.” His chilling messages included the claim: “I now own you. Next time I call, answer or this goes viral.”

Judge Penny Moreland emphasised that blackmail is a “vicious” and “mean” offence. The court heard how Quinn recorded the victim without her consent and used those recordings as a “vile” tool to force her into further sexual acts. When the terrified girl complied, Quinn responded with the “serious” and demeaning phrase, “Good girl.”

Sentence and Lifetime Registration

Quinn pleaded guilty to blackmail, making an indecent image, and multiple counts of attempting to incite a child into sexual activity. For his “abhorrent” crimes in Burradon and North Tyneside, Michael Quinn was:

  • Sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
  • Placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
  • Subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for 10 years.
  • Barred for life from working with children or vulnerable adults.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Quinn is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Northumbria Police. His residency in Burradon, North Tyneside, and his digital behaviour remain under the most “serious” level of scrutiny.

As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, Quinn must comply with strict notification requirements. Northumbria Police emphasise that their cyber-crime units specifically target predators who use anonymous apps to “viciously” exploit children. Any breach of his 10-year SHPO or further “vile” digital behaviour will result in his immediate return to Newcastle Crown Court for a “serious” custodial sentence.
