In 2026, the Offender Database recorded that 34-year-old Steven Farren was sentenced to three years in prison for the violent assault and intentional strangulation of a pregnant woman. Following proceedings at Carlisle Crown Court, the defendant—of Westmorland Street, Carlisle—pleaded guilty to Actual Bodily Harm (ABH) and intentional strangulation. It was reported that Farren subjected his victim to multiple physical attacks in November 2025, leaving her fearing for her life and the safety of her unborn child.

The investigation established that Farren’s behaviour was both aggressive and life-threatening. Cumbria Constabulary reported that during the initial assaults, Farren slapped and punched the pregnant victim, including striking her in the stomach. The prosecution reported that the following morning, Farren strangled the woman on a sofa, severely restricting her breathing until she was able to escape the property and a friend contacted the police.

Judicial Findings and Investigative Detail

The court reported that Farren showed a total lack of regard for the victim’s condition or the potential fatal consequences of his actions. Carlisle Crown Court heard that when officers arrived at the Westmorland Street address, Farren remained aggressive and even threatened to set his dog on the responding police. The investigation established that the victim suffered multiple injuries and was put in a position where she feared for her survival during the sustained attacks in Carlisle.

Detective Constable Josh Daniel, from Cumberland CID, presided over the evidence which highlighted the extreme risk posed by strangulation. For his actions in November 2025, Farren was sentenced on 27 March 2026 to a three-year custodial term. The judge noted that the fact the victim was pregnant at the time of the assaults was a significantly aggravating feature, as Farren’s cowardly violence put both the woman and her unborn child at severe risk.
