In 2022, a Yorkshire sex offender, Raymond Ellis, received an extended sentence following a police appeal against his ‘lenient’ punishment.

Raymond Ellis, a resident of Sheffield, received a five-year prison sentence in May 2022 following his conviction for an indecent assault perpetrated over thirty years prior.

His sentence was prolonged by over two years after a hearing at London’s Court of Appeal.

Dave Stopford, leader of the Major Incident Review Team, stated: “I am gratified that the Court of Appeal concurred with our evaluation that the initial sentence imposed for Raymond Ellis’s egregious offence was excessively lenient.”

“Raymond Ellis’ victim has endured the consequences of the incident since the age of 17.” For over three decades, she remained unaware of her assailant’s identity.

“Due to advancements in forensic technology, the relentless commitment of the officers and personnel in the MIRT, and the assistance of specialised scientists, we successfully identified Raymond Ellis and presented him to the courts earlier this year.

“However, we firmly believed that the sentence imposed did not sufficiently reflect the gravity of Raymond Ellis’ offence, nor did it seem to serve justice for the victim.”

“She has endured the trauma of sexual assault for three decades, while Raymond Ellis would serve only a fraction of that time in prison.”

After a hearing on Friday, July 29, at the Court of Appeal, Raymond Ellis, previously of Eastville in Bristol but residing in Sheffield at the time of the assault, had his prison sentence increased to 10 years, with a 25 per cent reduction for his guilty plea.

His cumulative sentence is now seven and a half years.
