In 2022, Paul Gellen, the Essex Rapist DJ, known as UK drum and bass artist DJ Sly, was found guilty of rape and sexual assault by Essex police.

A police report released after Paul Gellen’s sentence indicated that he sexually attacked a woman in December 2019 and subsequently raped her in March 2020.

The police report indicated that both occurrences had a similar pattern, wherein the victim awoke with no memory of the events following a night out with Paul Gellen.

The 46-year-old DJ and producer was apprehended following the woman’s report of the second occurrence.

He refuted the allegations.

Paul Gellen was convicted at Chelmsford Crown Court on Thursday, 5th May, and is scheduled for sentencing on 8th June.

After the conviction, Detective Constable Liv Howells stated: “Paul Gellen is a sexual predator who exploited the victim’s vulnerabilities.”

In both instances, she was unable to provide consent, and Paul Gellen used this for his own sexual enjoyment.

The lack of a negative response does not equate to an affirmative one.

Several prominent figures from the drum and bass scene have expressed their outrage at Paul Gellen’s behaviour, while initiating discussions regarding the treatment of women within the community.

The producer Workforce, previously part of SpectraSoul, tweeted: “Shall we persist in feigning ignorance regarding the issue of safe spaces for women in D&B (and the broader club scene), while headline DJs continue to be convicted of rape and sexual assault?” I have examined whether any public statements have been made — none exist.

DJ and producer Sweetpea tweeted: “Numerous identified rapists and abusers continue to secure engagements.” A broader issue exists regarding the treatment of women in the sector. Express revulsion and dismay towards DJ Sly, while also scrutinising your own associates, as some among you persist in collaborating with and supporting rapists.

Paul Gellen’s production work as DJ Sly commenced in 2006, and he established the Levels Records label in collaboration with d&b MC Swifta in 2017.

UPDATE

Paul Gellen, 46, was jailed for 15 years and received a further six years on licence.
