In 2022, Mohammed Elmi Mahamed, the Barnsley Rapist and Sex Offender, who perpetrated a ‘horrific sexual offence’ against a young woman, was sentenced to over six years in prison on Wednesday.

Mohammed Elmi Mahamed, 33, previously residing on Princess Street, Barnsley, was convicted of raping a 19-year-old woman, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, on New Year’s Day.

He confronted his victim, who had already lost her companions, at a taxi stand in Barnsley town centre during the early hours of January 1, 2022.

District of Columbia Becky Robinson from Barnsley CID stated: “Our victim was solitary and inebriated, rendering her susceptible, and Mohammed Elmi Mahamed intentionally exploited this vulnerability.”

He informed her that he would escort her to her friends, but this was a falsehood.

“Instead, he directed her to an alternate location where she endured a heinous sexual assault.”

The woman subsequently fled to the town centre, where she found a companion and recounted the incident.

DC Robinson stated: “We swiftly identified Mohammed Elmi Mahamed through CCTV investigations, leading to his arrest the subsequent day, followed by charges and remand in custody until his trial this week.”

Mohammed Elmi Mahamed denied his culpability, necessitating that the victim provide testimony before a jury in court, an inherently intimidating ordeal.

“I commend the victim for her fortitude during our investigation.”

Mohammed Elmi Mahamed was convicted of rape on Wednesday following a three-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

Mohammed Elmi Mahamed received a sentence of six years and nine months in prison.
