In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Michael Murphy, then 72, of Barriedale, Brockley, Lewisham, was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court following a three-week trial. Michael Murphy was handed a 16-year prison sentence for a series of vile and horrific sexual offences committed against three girls over a span of nearly 30 years. The court heard that Murphy used his connections within the music industry—claiming to be a tour manager for prominent bands—to groom the children and their families, often providing concert tickets to maintain his deceptive image as an “exciting man to know.”
The investigation began in 2015 when the first victim bravely came forward to report that Michael Murphy had abused her from the age of seven until she reached puberty in the 1980s. Murphy had built a position of trust with the girl’s parents and would sickeningly abuse her while reading her bedtime stories. A second victim contacted the Metropolitan Police in 2016 after watching a television programme about abuse. She detailed how Murphy had brainwashed her since she was nine years old, eventually manipulating her into running away to live with him in London for five years when she was 16.
A third victim reported that Michael Murphy had sexually abused her when she was nine years old during a trip to the USA and again at her home in St John’s Wood, London. Murphy was initially charged in 2018, but a first trial in July of that year resulted in a hung jury on several counts. Following a retrial in January 2019, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts for ten serious offences, including the rape of a child under 13, indecent assault, and making indecent photographs of a child.
As a result of his convictions for these depraved and violent crimes, Michael Murphy was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life. He is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by the Metropolitan Police, remaining under supervision for the duration of his life. At his sentencing, victims described him as a “serial predatory paedophile” who had used his “Uncle Mike” persona to ruin multiple lives. Any breach of his registration requirements in Brockley, Lewisham, or elsewhere in the UK will result in his immediate arrest and return to prison.
