Is prolific serial child molester Kevin Hazelwood Brighton Paedophile living near you? Is he still in prison or out now? A known paedophile, Kevin Hazelwood, who regularly raped a nine-year-old child under community supervision was imprisoned indefinitely.
Now fifty-eight, Kevin Hazelwood was on the sex offenders’ registry for downloading child pornography but yet subjected the girl to a series of assaults. He was instructed to serve five years and seven months minimum.
On March 10, at Lewes Crown Court, he entered a guilty plea on six charges of rape, two counts of attempted rape, and two counts of indecent assault—all on the same victim.
From Brighton, Kevin Hazelwood also pleaded counts of sexual activity with or in the presence of a child under 13, previous assaults on a girl dating back to the 1980s and for producing pornographic films of minors.
Judge Richard Hayward said Kevin Hazelwood was “cunning and manipulative” and “unable or unwilling” in terms of controlling his paedophile tendencies.
Kevin Hazelwood entered a guilty plea to twenty specimen counts of creating obscene images of children, so she was listed on the sex offenders’ register in October 2002.
Judge Hayward told him, “You alone are to blame before everybody leaps to judgment. You manipulate people with great cleverness. You gave every sign of following the sex offenders’ register. Hence, there is no reason why a stressed-out probationary officer or anybody else should know about it.”
He then said: “You are a determined and predatory paedophile, and you will remain a danger to young girls for the foreseeable future.”
Gillian Etherton, prosecuting, informed the court that Kevin Hazelwood befriended the nine-year-old girl’s parents before “systemically sexually abusing” her from when she was about six years old until two weeks before his arrest in November 2005.
Miss Etherton remarked: “It would appear from a pretty early period that the defendant showed a considerable interest (in the young girl).
“At face value, he looked to get on well with her and would tell her mother that he would take her up to her room to give mum breathing space.”
Miss Etherton said the mother remembered that he always started ideas of sleepovers with the daughter at Hazelwood’s house.
She said that the abuse surfaced in November 2005 when the kid told her mother in a casual discussion that “Uncle Kevin does it to me”.
Miss Etherton added, “The mother immediately understood what the disclosure meant.”
The girl also mentioned that Kevin Hazelwood would “call her a baby” when she would weep while being mistreated.
The girl’s interaction with her mother resulted in police being called in and an interview whereby Kevin Hazelwood claimed to have mistreated her three years ago.
“He would sometimes say to her, ‘I’m bored, let’s play a game’, and often entice her with different games and presents,” Miss Etherton remarked.
“She said she avoided presents since they made her think of him.”
The court learnt that Kevin Hazelwood had photographed the girl indecently and threatened to forward images to her mother should she fail to keep her quiet about the assault.
Miss Etherton observed: “She felt to some degree to blame and in trouble and to some degree that explains her silence.”
After the November 2005 girl’s police interview, Kevin Hazelwood was detained and questioned but first refused to comment except to admit mistreating another small child between 1981 and 1985.
Later on, he came clean about creating obscene images, including ones of the nine-year-old daughter, which were subsequently erased.
