In 2022, Ionut Vasiliu, the Corby Sex Offender, a convicted Romanian rapist residing in Corby, who violated stringent sex offender registration regulations, was apprehended by the Immigration Service and will be deported from the United Kingdom.

Ionut Vasiliu, formerly residing on Hazelwood Road and Nasmith Avenue in Corby, was apprehended on Wednesday, August 17, due to a collaborative investigation involving Northamptonshire Police and the Immigration Service.

The 37-year-old is scheduled for deportation to Romania after being discovered residing in Corby in violation of his notice obligations.

A spokesperson for Northants Police stated: “Ionut Vasiliu was convicted in Romania in 2006 for sexual offences and is consequently subject to the same stringent regulations as a Registered Sex Offender in this country.”

“However, during the operation yesterday, Ionut Vasiliu was discovered residing at Bonnington Walk, Corby, an address he had failed to report to the police.”

“He was apprehended concerning the violation, accepted a community resolution to expedite the case, and was detained by the Immigration Service for deportation.”

On June 8, 2006, Ionut Vasiliu was convicted of rape by the Botosani Court in Romania, a nation outside the United Kingdom. The application is submitted per section 100(2)(a) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

Detective Chief Inspector Liz Wilcox stated: “During this week of action, we have not only focused on individuals through conventional warrants and enforcement measures, but have also collaborated with our partners, such as the Immigration Service, to identify lawbreakers and ensure their prosecution.”

“Ionut Vasiliu violated his obligations by failing to inform us of the change in his address. I am pleased that this operation revealed that, ensuring he will no longer be present on the streets of Northamptonshire as a consequence.”

Then, on July 18, 2024, Border Force officers stopped him as he got off a ferry in Holyhead, which had travelled from Dublin.

Ionut Vasiliu, then 39, was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment at Caernarfon Crown Court (sitting at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court).

He had previously pleaded guilty to attempting to enter the UK in breach of a deportation order.
