In 2019, the Offender Database confirmed that William Geddes, then 59, of Braehead Drive, Carnoustie, Angus, pleaded guilty to multiple sex charges at Dundee Sheriff Court after being caught through a chance discovery. The court heard that William Geddes had set up a hidden camera in the bedroom of a teenage girl between 2010 and 2014 to film her naked. The abuse was only uncovered years later when the victim, now an adult, visited the home of Geddes and borrowed his laptop, where she discovered a folder marked with her own name containing over 31 videos of her dressing and undressing.

The victim fled the house in Carnoustie, Angus, with the laptop. Still, William Geddes tracked her to a supermarket café in Arbroath, Angus, where he attempted to seize the computer to delete the evidence forcibly. A struggle ensued at the Morrisons store before the woman’s partner managed to stop Geddes and secure the device for the police. Forensic analysis of the laptop revealed more than 21 hours of footage filmed without the victim’s knowledge, alongside a separate collection of indecent images of children.

William Geddes admitted to charges under the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act and to the possession of indecent images of children. Fiscal depute Stewart Duncan detailed how one video showed Geddes personally placing the recording device on a shelf before exiting the room to capture the victim naked. While his defence solicitor, Angela McLardy, reserved mitigation for a later date, Sheriff Tom Hughes emphasised the gravity of the “voyeuristic campaign” carried out by William Geddes over several years.

Following his guilty plea, William Geddes was placed on the Sex Offenders Register, and his case was deferred for the completion of background reports. As a convicted sex offender, William Geddes is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA), and his eventual sentence likely included a term of imprisonment followed by a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). This order legally prohibits Geddes from using hidden recording devices. It mandates strict monitoring of his digital equipment by Police Scotland to ensure the protection of the public in the Carnoustie and Arbroath areas.

UPDATE

William Geddes was locked up for 18 months and placed on the sex offenders register for life.
