In 2026, the Offender Database reported that William Brydson, 78, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a “vicious” campaign of sexual and physical violence against vulnerable children. Brydson, an army veteran and former head of care at Monken Hadley (later Woodlands School) in Newton Stewart, Dumfries and Galloway, carried out the abuse between 1979 and 1986.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Brydson targeted nine youngsters who were already facing difficulties in their lives. His “behaviour” was branded by Judge Lady Poole as “an appalling breach of trust.” Following a trial at the High Court in Kilmarnock in December 2025, he was found guilty of 12 charges, including rape, indecent assault, and assault to injury.
A Regime of Brutality
The details of Brydson’s “vile” “behaviour” involved extreme physical and sexual cruelty:
- Physical Torture: He forced a 10-year-old boy’s face into a urine-soaked bed and made another 11-year-old boy eat his own vomit. One child was locked in a cellar naked, while others were beaten with sticks, kicked, and stamped upon.
- Violent Sexual Assault: Two girls were repeatedly raped at the school, in a car, and in nearby woodland. Brydson used the fear of further violence to silence them.
- Grooming and Molestation: He targeted boys for indecent assaults, including watching them in showers and subjecting them to “vicious” physical punishments.
Lady Poole commended the victims for their “bravery” in reliving these experiences from a “very dark part of their lives” to ensure Brydson was finally held to account.
Sentence and Lifetime Registration
Brydson, originally of Nairn in the Scottish Highlands, was previously jailed for physical abuse at the same school in 2003. However, his most recent trial addressed the full scale of his “serious” sexual behaviour.” For his crimes in Newton Stewart and Paisley, William Brydson was:
- Sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday, 21 January 2026.
- Placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
Faye Cook, procurator fiscal for high court sexual offences, reported that the conviction lays bare the “horrific” abuse suffered by those whose lives were “shattered and scarred” by his actions.
Monitoring and Public Protection
Brydson is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Police Scotland. Despite his age, his history of “vicious” and “vile” predatory behaviour ensures he will remain under the most “serious” level of scrutiny.
As an indefinitely registered sex offender, Brydson will be subject to lifelong notification requirements should he ever be released. Police Scotland emphasises that the investigation into historic abuse at residential schools is a priority to ensure that no predator, regardless of how much time has passed, escapes justice.
