In January 2016, the BBC Paedophiles, Tony Wadsworth and Julie Wadsworth, ceased broadcasting for “personal reasons.” In April 2016, it was revealed that both faced charges related to historical child sexual offences.
Tony Wadsworth and Julie Wadsworth’s trial at Warwick Crown Court commenced on 19 May 2017; the couple refuted the allegations.
The allegations primarily pertained to Tony Wadsworth and Julie Wadsworth enticing young boys into sexual encounters with Julie Wadsworth, while Tony Wadsworth served as a “lookout”.
The episodes transpired between 1992 and 1996, during which the boys were aged 11 to 15, occurring at a golf course and adjacent forest in the Warwickshire market town of Atherstone, as well as at Tony Wadsworth and Julie Wadsworth’s property, which was located in Atherstone at the time.
On 9 June 2017, Tony Wadsworth and Julie Wadsworth were found guilty of nine counts of indecently assaulting six minors and five counts of outraging public decency, by a majority conviction of 10–2.
Julie Wadsworth was exonerated of an additional charge concerning an event purportedly occurring at the couple’s residence.
Tony Wadsworth and Julie Wadsworth were sentenced to five years of incarceration each and mandated to register as lifelong sex offenders.
In his concluding speech, Judge Andrew Lockhart QC characterised the case as “serious offences against boys, some of whom were quite young – I have concluded that all were adversely affected by their experiences.”
Following their convictions, a BBC representative said they were no longer affiliated with the organisation.
De Montfort University rescinded Tony Wadsworth’s doctorate.
Tony Wadsworth and Julie Wadsworth became eligible for parole on January 6, 2020.
On 7 November 2021, the Sunday Mercury announced that Tony Wadsworth and Julie Wadsworth had recently been liberated from incarceration.
