In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Thomas Goodman, then 45 years old, was sentenced to 260 years in prison in a federal court in Providence, Rhode Island. Goodman collapsed in shock as Judge John McConnell handed down a term 160 years longer than the prosecution had requested. The vile and predatory nature of his crimes was described by the judge as being of a “depravity beyond comprehension,” involving the horrific sexual abuse of a newborn baby starting from just three weeks of age.

The investigation into Thomas Goodman began in May 2018 when his phone was confiscated by his employers at a security company for breaching workplace rules. His horrified bosses uncovered a massive stash of vile child sexual abuse material and immediately alerted the authorities. A subsequent raid by police established that Goodman was in possession of approximately 7,800 indecent images and 370 disturbing videos, many of which he had produced himself between 2007 and 2018.

Thomas Goodman admitted to filming thousands of clips of himself abusing the infant until she was 18 months old, as well as two other girls aged six and 12. He shared these sickening videos online for other depraved individuals to view. Prosecutor Lee Vilker stated that these were “by far the worst” crimes he had ever encountered, noting that Goodman had permanently scarred his victims. The judge ensured Goodman would never be released by ordering eight 30-year sentences and one 20-year term to be served consecutively.

As a result of his convictions for the production and possession of vile child abuse material, Thomas Goodman will spend the remainder of his life in a federal penitentiary. While this sentence was handed down in the United States, it highlights a big difference in sentencing structures compared to the UK, where “whole life” terms for such offences are rare. Goodman remains a registered sex offender for life and is managed under the highest level of supervision within the US federal prison system, with zero possibility of parole.
