British Guest, Suroj Bk, the Ceredigion Sex Offender, infiltrated a woman’s residence during the night and sexually attacked her while she slept next to her partner, according to court testimony.
Suroj Bk initially refuted his presence on the premises but thereafter asserted that the accusation was a fabrication of the victim’s imagination.
A court, in sentencing the 27-year-old defendant to prison, acknowledged the existence of others acquainted with Suroj Bk who doubted the occurrence of the incident, stating that such individuals were “either utterly myopic or remarkably credulous.” The victim of the sexual assault possesses perpetual legal anonymity.
Swansea Crown Court was informed that the sexual assault occurred at a residence in Ceredigion last year, when the defendant unlawfully entered the woman’s home at night, infiltrated her bed, and inappropriately groped her legs and genitals while she slept next to her boyfriend. In a statement presented before the court by prosecution barrister Georgia Donohue, the victim asserted that the sexual attack had “damaged her life in every conceivable way.” She stated that she has been unable to resume work following the incident and vacated the location where it occurred, now suffering from “graphic nightmares” regarding the assault. The woman stated that her parents were “heartbroken” regarding the incident involving their daughter.
Suroj Bk, from Llangrannog, Ceredigion, had previously been found guilty at trial of trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence and of sexual assault when he returned to the court for sentencing. He possesses no prior convictions. Dyfed Thomas, representing Suroj Bk, stated that the court references highlighted the defendant’s commendable efforts in Nepal and India, as well as throughout his tenure in Wales, and affirmed his “exemplary character.” He stated that Suroj Bk was married with two young children and “committed a foolish act while intoxicated that he would not have otherwise perpetrated,” characterising the conviction as a “remarkable decline from grace” for his client. The counsel stated that he had been informed that a jail term of four years would be “detrimental” to the defendant’s application for residency in the UK.
Judge Paul Thomas KC stated that the evidence presented at trial clearly indicated that the defendant had consumed excessive alcohol on the night in issue and entered the complainant’s residence with the intention of committing sexual assault. He stated that Suroj Bk subsequently refuted the allegation, asserting that the victim had “in some manner been fantasising about the incident,” and characterised the argument presented by the defendant to the jury as “one of the most implausible I have encountered in some time.” The judge stated that the sexual assault profoundly impacted the victim, a fact that could not be overstated. He expressed “great concern” that her situation had deteriorated due to local individuals who believed she fabricated the allegations, describing those individuals as “either completely oblivious or remarkably gullible.”
Judge Thomas stated that he had reviewed letters and references presented to the court on behalf of the defendant, including one from the guru at Skanda Vale temple, and acknowledged that Suroj Bk was held in high regard; nonetheless, he noted that these individuals had likely only observed Suroj Bk’s “positive, sober side.” The defendant received a sentence of three and a half years in jail, with the possibility of serving up to half of that time in detention before being released on licence to complete the remainder in the community. The defendant will remain a registered sex offender for life and is subject to a restraining order prohibiting any contact with his victim or any posts about her on social media. The judge stated that the decision about Suroj Bk’s permission to remain in the UK post-sentence was the responsibility of others, not the court.
Following the sentencing, Dyfed-Powys Police Detective Inspector Sam Gregory, the case’s lead officer, commended the victim’s bravery in coming forward. She stated: “Incidents of this nature are fortunately quite rare in Ceredigion, and I wish to reassure the community that this was an isolated occurrence, with the identification and apprehension of the suspect executed swiftly and effectively.” The victim in this case exhibited remarkable bravery in reporting to the police. Although the investigation was complex, it was the expertise and perseverance of the forensic officers, in collaboration with the investigative team and the victim, that resulted in this successful prosecution. I trust that the term imposed on Suroj Bk conveys a definitive and robust message regarding Dyfed-Powys Police’s serious approach to allegations of sexual offences. We will heed your concerns and diligently strive to attain justice.
