In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Shaun Scott, then 23, of Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway, (originally from Kelloholm, Dumfriesshire)was convicted of “vile” and “vicious” rapes involving two different victims. Scott appeared at the High Court in Glasgow, where a jury found him guilty of a “serious” campaign of sexual violence in Sanquhar, Dumfries and Galloway.

The investigation by Police Scotland revealed that Scott “callously” raped a 20-year-old woman twice in October 2017. He was also found guilty of “vilely” raping a second victim on various occasions between March 2011 and February 2012, when she was just 16 years old. Both women reported that their relationships with Scott began happily before “viciously” deteriorating into violence and “serious” sexual abuse. One of the women was heavily pregnant at the time of the rape.

“Dishonest” Denials and the “I’m Sorry” Text
The court heard “serious” evidence regarding a text exchange between Scott and his 20-year-old victim. After the “vile” attacks, the victim messaged him stating: “Clearly you don’t force someone u ‘love’ to have sex TWICE. There’s a word for that – rape.” Scott “viciously” texted back, saying he was “really sorry.”

In a “dishonest” attempt to avoid justice, Scott claimed in court that he was only apologising for “pushing her over” and “callously” argued that he did not see the word “rape” in the text due to struggles with reading and writing. The jury “viciously” rejected his excuses, finding him guilty of the “serious” charges against both women.

“Psychological Consequences” and Registration
The judge emphasised that both victims have suffered “serious” psychological consequences as a result of Scott’s “vile” behaviour. Prosecution Lindsey Dalziel reported that Scott already had previous convictions for theft and road traffic offences, but these “vicious” rapes represented a “serious” escalation in his criminality.

For his “vile” and “vicious” crimes, Shaun Scott was:

  • Convicted of multiple counts of rape.
  • Placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
  • Sentenced to just 7 years in prison.

Scott is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Police Scotland, ensuring his behaviour and residency in Lockerbie, Sanquhar, and the wider Dumfries and Galloway area are strictly monitored for the rest of his life. Any future “vicious” conduct or “dishonest” attempts to contact his victims will result in his immediate arrest and “serious” legal consequences.
