In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Shaun McCabe, then 25, of Dundee, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment at the High Court in Glasgow. On Monday, 11 February 2019, McCabe was sentenced for a staggering 23 offences, including child rape, abduction, and “depraved” acts of violence committed over several years.

The investigation established that McCabe carried out a campaign of sexual and physical abuse against multiple victims, many of whom were children. His convictions included abduction and rape of a child, indecent assault, and assaults to the danger of life. The court reported that these crimes were committed alongside domestic and sexual abuse-related offences against two women.

Pattern of Violence and Abduction

The scale of McCabe’s offending was described as “horrendous,” involving repeated acts of sexual penetration and physical injury.

  • Child Victims: McCabe was convicted of multiple counts of rape and indecent assault against children, including one instance of “abduction and rape.”
  • Violent Assaults: His convictions included “assault to the danger of life” and “assault to permanent disfigurement,” reflecting the “vicious” level of physical harm inflicted during his attacks.
  • Domestic Abuse: The trial concluded that McCabe subjected two adult women to serious domestic and sexual abuse, including rape to injury.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his 23 crimes across Dundee and Glasgow, Shaun McCabe was handed the following:

  • Custodial Sentence: 10 years in immediate custody.
  • Sex Offenders Register: McCabe was placed on the register for an indefinite period (life).
  • Supervision: He will be subject to strict supervision upon his eventual release to manage the risk he poses to the community.

The judge emphasised that the length of the sentence reflected the sheer number of victims and the “abhorrent” nature of the sexual violence. McCabe had been convicted of the offences the previous month before returning to the High Court for final sentencing.

Monitoring and Public Protection

McCabe is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Police Scotland. His status as a “dangerous” serial predator who targeted both children and adults remains under “critical” scrutiny.

As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, McCabe must comply with strict notification requirements regarding his address, employment, and travel. Police Scotland states that they will use every available resource to monitor his compliance following his release. Any breach of his registration conditions or his licence will result in his immediate return to the High Court.
