In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Shane Liptrot, then 26, of Ashton-in-Makerfield, was sentenced to 12 years in prison at Manchester Crown Court. Liptrot was convicted on 12 December 2025 of knowingly trespassing with intent to commit a sexual offence, rape, assault by penetration, and possession of a bladed article.

The investigation by Greater Manchester Police established that on 7 June 2025, Liptrot targeted a stranger at her home in Wigan. He repeatedly banged on her door, produced a knife, and forced his way inside despite her attempts to stop him. Once inside, he subjected her to rape.

“Horrific” Impact and Evidence

The court reported that after the attack, Liptrot refused to leave until the survivor provided her phone number. He called her while still inside the property to verify the number was correct. Following the incident, the survivor bravely provided an impact statement detailing how she had “lost everything,” including her home and possessions, and how the trauma disrupted her efforts to rebuild her life following a previous relationship.

Detective Constable Harris praised the survivor’s “remarkable courage” in supporting the investigation, noting that her bravery ensured a “very dangerous” man was removed from the streets.

Sentence and Registration Requirements

For his crimes in Wigan, Shane Liptrot was:

  • Sentenced to 12 years in prison.
  • Placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

The judge at Manchester Crown Court handed down the sentence on Friday, 23 January 2026. Liptrot had been remanded in custody since his arrest a few hours after the initial report.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Liptrot is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Greater Manchester Police. His status and his history remain under “critical” scrutiny to ensure public safety.

As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, Liptrot must comply with notification requirements for the rest of his life. Greater Manchester Police state that they will relentlessly pursue perpetrators of sexual offences and stand with survivors to bring offenders to justice. Any breach of his registration conditions will result in his return to Manchester Crown Court.
