In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Russell Sheller, then 31, of Acorn Close, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, was handed a 13-year extended sentence for a series of predatory child sex offences. Sheller was sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court on 15 March 2019, with the judge ordering him to serve eight years in custody and a further five years on licence.

The investigation, led by Thames Valley Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT), uncovered a “serious” and widespread campaign of exploitation. Between October and November 2018, Sheller attempted to arrange a meeting with a person he believed to be a 13-year-old girl for the purpose of penetrative sexual activity. During their communications, he “callously” sent her a video of himself engaging in a sexual act.

The court heard that in June 2018, Sheller had also targeted another 13-year-old girl, twice causing her to send him intimate photographs of herself. Forensic analysis of his devices revealed a vast collection of hundreds of indecent images of children, including many at the most severe category. Sheller “vilely” distributed these images via a social media app, contributing to the “untold suffering” of children globally.

During his police interview, Sheller admitted to viewing and sharing images with other adults but “dishonestly” denied chatting with children online. Detective Constable Petra Summers emphasised that the investigation involved a close partnership with foreign law enforcement agencies, as victims were identified both in the UK and abroad. Sheller pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to facilitate a child sexual offence, sexual exploitation, and breaching both a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) and notification requirements.

As a result of his convictions, Russell Sheller was made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and must remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life. He is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Thames Valley Police, ensuring his digital behaviour and activities in High Wycombe are strictly monitored. Any attempt to breach his indefinite order or target further victims will result in his immediate return to prison.
