In 2023, the Offender Database reported that Robin Young, then 40, of Grimsbury Square, Bodicote, Oxfordshire, was sentenced to 14 years in prison at Oxford Crown Court. Young, an accountant and business owner, was convicted of six counts related to the sexual abuse of a primary school-aged girl, including charges of rape.

The investigation established that Young abused his position of trust to gain access to the victim. The abuse occurred over a period of years, sometimes in the presence of the victim’s infant brother. Evidence at trial showed that Young had previously admitted to a partner that he was interested in children after she discovered his internet search history. Despite these admissions, Young maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.

Impact and Judicial Comments

The victim provided an impact statement to the court, detailing the long-term consequences of the abuse. She reported that she began self-harming in her teens to manage feelings of shame and disgust. She also described the ordeal of having to relive the trauma during the trial due to Young’s denials.

Recorder John Ryder KC noted the following from a pre-sentence report:

  • Lack of Remorse: Young showed no insight into the harm caused and considered himself a victim of the legal proceedings.
  • Normalisation: The probation service concluded that the assaults had become “normalised” in Young’s mind.
  • Breach of Trust: Young utilised his respectability to gain the trust of the victim’s mother to create opportunities for the abuse.

Sentence and Registration Requirements

For the offences in Bodicote and Oxford, Robin Young was:

  • Sentenced to 14 years in prison.
  • Handed an additional year on licence under the supervision of the probation service.
  • Placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
  • Subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

The judge emphasised that Young refused to seek help for his inclinations years prior because he objected to the terminology used by therapy organisations.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Young is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Thames Valley Police. His status and history remain under scrutiny to ensure public safety.

As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, Young must comply with notification requirements. Thames Valley Police state that managing such offenders is a priority. Any breach of his SHPO or licence conditions will result in his return to Oxford Crown Court.
