In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Robert Eustace, then 54, of Sir Williams Close, Aylsham, Norfolk, was sentenced to 5½ years in prison. On 10 October 2019, Eustace, a former rugby coach, appeared at Leeds Crown Court after being convicted of a six-year campaign of grooming teenage boys across the country.

The investigation established that Eustace led a fantasy double life, using social media platforms like Skype and Kik Messenger to target vulnerable youngsters. Between 2011 and 2017, he groomed three boys aged 13 to 15, offering gifts such as vapes in exchange for sexual encounters at hotels and in woodland. The offences were uncovered in April 2017 after the mother of a 15-year-old boy in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, discovered sexually explicit messages from an account named “Rob Norfolk” on her son’s iPad. Upon his arrest, police discovered 190 indecent images of children on his devices, including 37 Category A files.

Judicial Findings and Investigative Detail

Judge Mushtaq Khokhar emphasised the profound psychological damage Eustace inflicted on his victims and their families. The court reported that Eustace only entered guilty pleas on the day one of his victims was brought to court to provide video evidence, prolonging the trauma for the families involved. The prosecution emphasised that Eustace had deliberately targeted a child with existing mental health issues and had coached his victims to keep their arrangements secret.

The judge emphasised that while the physical meetings never took place, the aftermath caused “considerable damage,” leaving the children anxious and devoid of confidence. The court heard that Eustace had asked a 13-year-old boy to meet him in the woods and warned him not to tell anyone, saying, “Good. Let’s keep it that way.” For his crimes in Wakefield and Norfolk, the court determined that Eustace required an immediate custodial sentence to address his predatory behaviour and the possession of extreme pornographic material.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For his crimes in West Yorkshire and Norfolk, Robert Eustace was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: Five years and six months in immediate custody.
  • SHPO: A Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed to restrict future internet and social media use.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements are in effect for life.
  • Convictions: Admitted six sexual offences, including engaging in sexual communication with a child, arranging the commission of a child sex offence, and possession of Category A indecent images.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Eustace is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Norfolk Constabulary and West Yorkshire Police. His history of using his role in youth sports and social media to groom children across different counties means he remains under the highest level of scrutiny.

As a lifetime member of the Sex Offenders Register, Eustace must comply with notification requirements regarding his residence in Aylsham, Norfolk. Authorities state that his SHPO is a critical tool for the Public Protection Unit to monitor his digital footprint and ensure he does not re-access youth coaching or social media platforms to target new victims. Any breach of his registration conditions or his licence terms following his release from prison will result in his immediate return to Leeds Crown Court.
