In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Philip Young, then 49, formerly of Swindon but now of Enfield, pleaded guilty to 48 sexual offences at Winchester Crown Court. Young, a former Conservative councillor on Swindon Borough Council, admitted to a campaign of abuse against his former wife, Joanne Young, spanning from 2010 to 2024.

The investigation by Wiltshire Police revealed that Young systematically drugged his wife to facilitate sexual attacks and recorded her without her consent. The victim, who waived her right to anonymity to ensure her ex-husband was held accountable, sat in the gallery as the indictment took nearly 30 minutes to read out.

Specific Guilty Pleas and Evidence

Young admitted to the following:

  • 11 counts of rape.
  • 11 counts of administering a substance with the intent to stupefy/overpower to allow sexual activity.
  • 14 counts of voyeurism, including one count covering at least 200 separate acts.
  • 7 counts of assault by penetration.
  • 4 counts of sexual assault.
  • One count of publishing an obscene article, involving the distribution of non-consensual images on at least 500 occasions.

The court reported that some of the sexual offences were committed alongside other men. Five other defendants appeared in court on the same day; four pleaded not guilty, and one has yet to enter a plea.

Trial for Outstanding Charges

Young pleaded not guilty to eight further charges, including:

  • Making indecent images of children.
  • Possessing prohibited images of children.
  • Possessing extreme pornographic images depicting rape, animals, and death.

A trial for these contested offences is scheduled for 5 October 2026 at Winchester Crown Court.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Young has been remanded in custody at Bullingdon Prison pending his next court appearance. His status and history remain under “critical” scrutiny by Wiltshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Detective Superintendent Geoff Smith paid tribute to Joanne Young’s “incredible bravery” throughout the complex investigation. Following his eventual sentencing, Young will be managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life. Any further “abhorrent” behaviour or breach of registration conditions will result in his return to the Crown Court.
