In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Peter Phillips, then 60, of Maderia Place, Brighton, pleaded guilty to the rape of a female and sexual assault by penetration at Lewes Crown Court. The court appearance took place on Tuesday, 20 January 2026.
The investigation by Sussex Police established that the offences occurred in June 2025. Phillips met the 34-year-old victim, from Worthing, in Brighton and began a process of grooming her using money and drugs. Later that month, he invited her to a festival where he encouraged the consumption of alcohol and drugs to increase her vulnerability. He then took her to a hotel, where he subjected her to a violent and sustained sexual assault before raping her.
Investigation and Arrest
The victim reported the attack to the police, and an investigation was launched with support from specialist officers. Phillips was arrested on 6 August 2025 and charged the same day. He has been remanded in custody since his arrest.
Detective Police Constable Ryan Dale described Phillips as a “highly dangerous and calculated sexual predator.” He praised the victim’s “immense courage” in coming forward and supported the police’s commitment to tackling violence against women and girls.
Conviction and Sentencing Schedule
Following his guilty plea at Lewes Crown Court, Phillips remains in custody. He is:
- Convicted of rape of a female aged 16 or over.
- Convicted of sexual assault by penetration.
Peter Phillips is scheduled to appear for sentencing on 10 April 2026. The specific court location for the sentencing hearing is yet to be confirmed. Upon sentencing, he will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
Monitoring and Public Protection
Following his release from prison, Phillips will be managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Sussex Police. His status and his residency in Brighton will remain under scrutiny.
As a registered sex offender, Phillips will be subject to notification requirements. Sussex Police encourage any victims of sexual offences to report them online, via 101, or by calling 999 in an emergency. Any breach of his future registration or licence conditions will result in his return to court.
