In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Peter May, then 57, was residing in Hyde, Greater Manchester. May, a convicted paedophile with a history of predatory behaviour, was living in a location approximately 200 yards from a primary school and a public swimming pool, and less than 200 yards from a private nursery.

The court heard that in 2010, May was sentenced at Minshull Street Crown Court to 28 months in prison after pleading guilty to five charges of sexual grooming. The offences targeted a 14-year-old girl. At the time of this offence, May was already serving a 12-month suspended sentence for a 2008 conviction of performing a sex act in front of a child. He was unmasked during a routine compliance visit by police officers who were checking the terms of his suspended sentence. Upon entering his home, officers found May naked from the waist down while viewing pictures of young girls online. A forensic examination of his computer later uncovered more than 800 images of the groomed schoolgirl.

During the 2010 proceedings, the prosecution emphasised that May had flagrantly disregarded his previous court orders to continue targeting children. His actions represented a significant breach of trust and a high risk of escalation. The judge presiding over the case noted that the length of the sentence was intended to reflect both the grooming offences and the breach of his prior suspended sentence.

As a result of his convictions for sexual grooming and indecent acts involving children, Peter May is on the Sex Offenders Register for life. He is managed under the highest level of Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) in the Tameside and Greater Manchester area. This involves permanent, intensive monitoring by Greater Manchester Police and the National Probation Service.

In 2019, despite his proximity to local schools and nurseries, May remained subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). This order includes legally enforceable conditions that prohibit him from having unsupervised contact with minors and mandate the monitoring of any internet-enabled devices. Any violation of these terms may result in his immediate arrest and return to custody.
