In December 2024, the Offender Database reported that Paul Barron, 56, of Hartlepool, County Durham, was sentenced to 30 months in prison at Teesside Crown Court. Barron was targeted during a joint operation between Cleveland Police and the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU) after engaging in predatory online activity earlier that year.
The court heard that between January and February 2024, the paedophile engaged in attempted sexual communications with a child and made arrangements for sexual activity with a child. These offences were intercepted by the Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT), a specialist unit dedicated to identifying and apprehending those who use the internet to exploit minors. Barron pleaded guilty to both charges, acknowledging his intent to meet and groom a child for sexual purposes.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Barnes emphasised that the collaborative efforts of NEROCU and local police forces are designed to ensure that those intent on causing harm to children are brought to justice. Inspector Allen Hull from NEROCU noted that the conviction was part of Operational Sentinel, a regional initiative focused on pursuing individuals who seek to abuse and exploit children through digital platforms.
On Thursday, 19 December 2024, Paul Barron was sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment. In addition to his custodial term, the judge made him subject to a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). This order places strict, legally enforceable limitations on Barron’s use of digital devices and the internet, as well as prohibiting him from any contact with children.
As a result of his convictions for child sex offences, Barron has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years. He will be managed under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) in Hartlepool. Cleveland Police and the National Probation Service will conduct regular monitoring and home visits to ensure he complies with all notification requirements and to manage the risk he poses to the community.
