In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Nigel Wheeler, then 62, formerly of Eastmere, Swindon, Wiltshire, was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court following a 12-day trial. Nigel Wheeler was convicted of a series of horrific and predatory sexual offences committed against a vulnerable woman in her thirties. The court heard that the vile abuse took place over ten days in July 2018 at the victim’s home in the Faringdon area of Oxfordshire. Wheeler targeted the victim specifically due to a mental disorder that impeded her ability to make choices, exploiting her vulnerability for his own sickening gratification.

The investigation, led by Thames Valley Police, uncovered a disturbing pattern of behaviour, including voyeurism and controlling or coercive conduct. Nigel Wheeler was found guilty of multiple counts, including engaging in sexual activity with a person with a mental disorder, forcing the victim to watch sexual acts, and common assault. Although the victim suffered no lasting physical injuries, the prosecution detailed the profound and violent psychological impact of the ordeal, which was aggravated by Wheeler’s calculated use of coercion within the intimate relationship.

Judge Ian Pringle QC described Nigel Wheeler as a “dangerous offender” and handed him an 18-year extended prison sentence, with an additional seven-year license period, totalling 25 years. This legal structure ensures that Wheeler must serve at least two-thirds of his custodial term before the Parole Board can assess his safety for release. The jury’s unanimous verdicts reflected the serious nature of his depraved actions and the necessity of removing him from the community for a significant duration.

As a result of his convictions for these vile sexual crimes, Nigel Wheeler was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life. He was also made subject to a life-long Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which legally restricts his contact with vulnerable adults and his internet activities. He is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Thames Valley Police and Wiltshire Police, remaining under supervision for the duration of his life. Any breach of his registration requirements or his SHPO in Faringdon, Swindon, or elsewhere will result in his immediate arrest and return to prison.
