In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Mohammed Suman, then 33, was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court. Suman, a Bangladeshi national who had lived in the UK since 2003, was jailed for eight years following the violent rape of a 15-year-old boy.

The court heard that in July 2018, Suman encountered his victim on the steps of Bolton Town Hall. After offering the teenager a cannabis joint, he led him on a walk toward Queens Park and the area behind the Bolton Lads and Girls Club. When the boy refused Suman’s sexual advances, Suman became violent, trapping the child against a fence and raping him. As the terrified victim attempted to flee, Suman subjected him to a second sexual assault.

During the trial, the victim’s mother provided a harrowing account of the impact the crime had on their family, stating that they would “have to live with the memory of this for the rest of our lives.” She expressed the deep guilt many parents feel in such circumstances, telling the court she thought she had failed in her duty to protect her son. The victim’s own statement highlighted the confusion and lasting trauma caused by the unprovoked attack.

Despite having no previous convictions, the severity and predatory nature of the attack led to a significant custodial term. In 2019, Mohammed Suman was sentenced to eight years in prison. Judge Timothy Clayson noted the predatory behaviour Suman displayed in targeting a vulnerable teenager in a public space.

In addition to his prison sentence, Mohammed Suman was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. He was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which legally prohibits him from contacting his victim or associating with any person under the age of 18.
