Michael Holmes, the West Cornforth rapist, who assaulted a woman with a crossbow and issued death threats has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Michael Holmes sexually assaulted the victim and perpetrated numerous attacks over an extended period.

On one occasion, he directed a crossbow at her and declared, “I’m going to kill you this time.”

Subsequently, while discharging the crossbow, it malfunctioned, resulting in the arrow missing the woman.

In a distinct occurrence, Michael Holmes fractured the woman’s nose by delivering three punches to her face.

A police inquiry commenced, and 42-year-old Michael Holmes was interrogated by officers.

He was then charged with multiple charges, including two counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, sexual assault, intentional grievous bodily injury, and attempted grievous bodily harm.

Michael Holmes, from West Cornforth, refuted the charges but was convicted after a five-day trial at Teesside Crown Court in February.

He appeared in court today (25 April) for sentencing, receiving a 16-year prison term with a further three years on extended licence.

Detective Constable Rebecca Horner, of the South Durham Safeguarding Team, spearheaded the investigation. She stated: “Michael Holmes is a violent and domineering bully who poses a threat to women, thus I am gratified that he is now incarcerated.”

The victim in this instance has demonstrated remarkable courage by approaching the police and assisting in the prosecution of her abuser.

“Although I recognise that the resolution of this case will not erase her recollections of Michael Holmes’ assaults, I sincerely hope that today’s sentencing will offer her further fortitude to reconstruct her life.”
