In May 2024, Michael Chand, the North London Rapist, detained 24 hours post-rape offence, was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of rape and assault against a woman he had recently encountered.

Michael Chand, 46, had established a friendship with his victim less than a week prior. He contacted the victim and instructed her to arrive at his residence in Acacia Gardens, N22, on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.

The woman was asked whether she found him appealing at his residence. Upon her failure to furnish the desired response, he exhibited verbal aggression and fury, asserting that she was prohibited from exiting the residence.

He subsequently commenced striking her and issued threats of violence not just against her but also against other individuals within her acquaintance. Michael Chand persistently assaulted her physically and raped her on three distinct occasions, despite her repeated refusals to engage in sexual activity.

On Friday, August 18, 2023, two days later, the woman contacted the police to report the rape. Subsequently, detectives promptly sought Michael Chand, who had departed from London. Michael Chand returned later that day, was apprehended, and brought into custody prior to being accused.

Detective Constable Cameron Crighton, who spearheaded the investigation, stated: “Michael Chand is a sexual predator who inflicted appalling sexual and physical abuse upon the victim in this case.”

The victim showed remarkable courage by approaching the police, offering a comprehensive account of the events, and subsequently recounting this testimony in court. She is pivotal to this conviction, and we should not underestimate the fortitude it has required for her to achieve this.

“We regard all reports of sexual assault with utmost seriousness and urge anyone who has experienced such offences to come forward and communicate with us.”

On Wednesday, April 24, Michael Chand was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of ten years after being convicted of three charges of rape and one act of assault at a trial at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday, February 16.
