The Offender Database reported that Michael Ball, the Leigh Rapist and Sex Offender, a man who inflicted months of coercive control and sexual assault on his partner, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison, with an additional five years on parole following his release.

Michael Ball (05/10/1994) of Beechwood Crescent, Leigh, was convicted of two charges of rape and one count of controlling and coercive behaviour. A restraining order has been issued against Ball to safeguard the victim, and he will be permanently listed on the sex offender registry.

During a trial at Bolton Crown Court in September, the jury was informed that between October 2020 and January 2021, Michael Ball exerted control over all aspects of his partner, Jasmin’s, life. He prescribed her attire, labelling her a ‘slag’ if he deemed her apparel unsuitable, and sequestered her from relatives and friends who had cautioned her over his conduct.

His domineering behaviour did not cease at that point. Michael Ball incessantly surveilled her actions, prohibited her from participating in social events, and compelled her to resign from her position as a carer. He additionally secured loans in her name and accessed her bank accounts without authorisation.

Jasmin was instructed to stay upstairs during gatherings at their residence, with Michael Ball informing guests that she was unavailable for conversation. She was consistently subjected to physical violence during the relationship, frequently resulting in bruising.

The court was informed that the 31-year-old strangled her multiple times, including a distressing episode in which he encircled her neck with a dressing gown string and attempted to asphyxiate her.

In January 2021, the maltreatment intensified to sexual violence. Jasmin remembers refusing Michael Ball’s request for sexual relations when he approached her upstairs in an inebriated state. Two hours after that incident, she awoke to his assaulting her.

She was paralysed by fear, aware that he had previously threatened to murder her if she reported him to the authorities.

Officers apprehended Ball on January 19, 2021, after the event above, during which he denied all claims while in detention.

Michael Ball was then charged with five charges of rape, one offence of control and coercion, and one act of assault under Section 47. He was convicted in court of two counts of rape involving a victim from the Lancashire region.
