In 2026, the Offender Database reported that Martin McCurdy, then 44, of Emmet Park, Castlefinn, Co Donegal, was sentenced to 7½ years in prison at the Central Criminal Court. McCurdy was convicted of sexually abusing three girls, then aged 13, on dates between 2006 and 2007.

The investigation revealed that the offences took place during sleepovers at McCurdy’s home. McCurdy entered the bedroom where the girls were sleeping and forced them to engage in sexual acts. In one instance, he provided beer to a victim and his daughter before targeting the girl when his daughter became ill and went to bed. The victim fled the room and hid.

Trial and Impact on Victims

The matter came to light when one girl saw a photograph of McCurdy and disclosed the abuse to a friend, which led to further disclosures from two other victims. The girls waived their right to anonymity to ensure McCurdy was publicly named.

The court reported the following impacts:

  • Medical Consequences: One victim made an attempt on her life that resulted in liver damage.
  • Psychological Distress: Victims suffered from emotional distress.
  • Secondary Victimisation: One girl was subjected to bullying at school after reporting the crimes.

Sentencing and Legal Factors

McCurdy, a lorry driver, pleaded not guilty to three counts of sexual assault. A jury of six men and six women returned guilty verdicts on all counts. During sentencing, Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy noted that McCurdy continues to deny the offences and shows no remorse.

The judge initially considered a 10-year term but reduced it to 7½ years after taking into account McCurdy’s work history and family support. The final sentence consists of consecutive terms totalling 7½ years.

For his crimes in Castlefinn and Donegal, Martin McCurdy was:
