In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Karen Robb, then 43, of Hartlepool, County Durham, was scheduled for release from prison in two weeks. Robb was originally sentenced to 16 months in custody in September 2018 at Teesside Crown Court for grooming a vulnerable autistic schoolboy.

The investigation established that Robb “viciously” targeted the child through digital platforms, sending sexually explicit messages and exposing her breasts during video web chats. The “vile” grooming behaviour was uncovered when Robb’s partner of 15 years became suspicious and discovered the incriminating communication on her mobile phone.

Grooming Tactics and Judicial Findings

The court heard that Robb utilised “manipulative” tactics, claiming she and the autistic boy had “fallen in love.” She admitted to meeting the child following sexual grooming and planning to engage in “naughty things.” Teesside Crown Court reported that Robb intentionally exploited the victim’s vulnerability and neurodivergence to facilitate the abuse.

Sentence and Statutory Requirements

For her “abhorrent” crimes in County Durham, Karen Robb was handed:

  • Custodial Sentence: 16 months in prison.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Notification requirements were imposed for 10 years.
  • Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO): Mandatory restrictions on her contact with minors and digital usage.

Monitoring and Public Protection

Robb is managed under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Cleveland Police. Upon her release in two weeks, she will be subject to strict licence conditions. Her history of “systematic” grooming of a vulnerable child means her residency in Hartlepool remains under “critical” scrutiny.

As a registered sex offender, Robb must comply with all notification requirements regarding her address and any changes to her circumstances. Cleveland Police state that they will use specialised units to monitor her internet activity to ensure compliance with her SHPO. Any breach of these conditions or any attempt to contact the victim will result in her immediate return to custody.
