Joseph Smith, the Walcot Paedophile and Sex Offender, will serve over twenty years in prison for exploiting his position of trust to rape and sexually assault two girls.
Joseph Smith exploited the girls for almost four years until his arrest in June 2019.
The 37-year-old refuted the allegations, and both survivors were compelled to withstand the two-week trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court in November of the previous year, during which the jury convicted him on nine counts of sexual assault and nine counts of rape.
Detective Constable Kerry Bromhall stated: “Joseph Smith inflicted years of physical abuse on the girls, in addition to the psychological anguish that such abuse frequently entails.”
I congratulate these young ladies on their courage, both in reporting their experiences and in repeatedly recounting them during an extensive inquiry, hindered by COVID-19, and while providing testimony at trial.
“I sincerely hope this sentence provides them with the closure they require and the assurance that Joseph Smith can no longer inflict harm on others.”
Joseph Smith, residing on Buckhurst Crescent, commenced his abuse of the initial victim by sexual touching, subsequently culminating in rape, while living in Wolverhampton.
The maltreatment persisted for several years until the child summoned the fortitude to disclose her experiences.
During the investigation by West Midlands Police’s Public Protection Unit, it was revealed that Joseph Smith had also sexually assaulted a second girl.
Joseph Smith was sentenced to 24 years in prison at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Thursday, January 13, and will be permanently listed on the Sex Offenders Register.
