In 2023, the Offender Database reported that John Ritchie, then 65, was jailed at Peterhead Sheriff Court for a series of sexual assaults spanning several decades. Ritchie, a joiner from Muirison Drive, Rosehearty, Aberdeenshire, was convicted after a trial that exposed a pattern of grooming and abuse dating back to the late 1980s.

The investigation was launched after a young girl recorded the abuse on her mobile phone and alerted Police Scotland. This act of bravery prompted other victims to come forward. A jury unanimously convicted Ritchie of three charges of sexual assault on two teenagers, alongside further majority verdicts for assaults on a woman and a third teenage girl.

Decades of Abuse and Impact
The court heard harrowing evidence of Ritchie’s offending across Aberdeenshire and East Lothian:

  • 1989–1991: Ritchie was convicted of pinning a teenage girl down on a bed and assaulting her in a car.
  • 1994: He was found guilty of indecently assaulting the same victim, then an older teenager, by pinning her against a wall.
  • Fraserburgh: He assaulted a second teenager at a pub by grabbing her breasts and buttocks.
  • 2012–2013: He sexually assaulted a woman at a hotel in Rosehearty.
  • Recent Offending: A third teenage girl was assaulted at addresses in Aberdeenshire and East Lothian, where Ritchie beckoned her into his bedroom.

A family member described Ritchie as a “monster” who groomed his victims. One victim’s impact statement detailed how the abuse caused daily panic attacks, anger, and a reliance on medication, stating he had “totally ruined” her life.

Sentence and Registration
Despite Ritchie refusing to plead guilty and forcing his victims to testify, the jury found him guilty of the majority of the charges. For his crimes, John Ritchie was:

  • Sentenced to 28 months in prison.
  • Placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.

Sheriff Ian Wallace delivered the sentence at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, noting the serious breach of trust involved in the grooming and assault of the young victims.

Monitoring and Public Protection
Ritchie is managed under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Police Scotland. His residency in Rosehearty and his history of offending across Aberdeenshire will be under strict scrutiny for the next decade.

The use of mobile phone recordings as evidence in this case was emphasised as a vital tool in bringing the predator to justice. Police Scotland continues to encourage victims of both recent and historic abuse to come forward, ensuring that even those who offended decades ago are held accountable for their actions.
