In 2019, the Offender Database confirmed that John Baker, AKA Sam Turner, then 41, of De Grey Street, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, was sentenced to an extended term of eight years at Hull Crown Court. Baker, a removals firm boss who utilised 13 different aliases, admitted to possessing over 900 indecent images of children, including 363 at Category A. The court heard that Baker had used computer programs to conceal his internet usage and had bypassed his Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) by accessing illegal material in the early hours while his partner was asleep.
The case brought to light Baker’s history of extreme predatory behaviour, including a 1998 conviction for the indecent assault of an eight-year-old girl in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Judge Mark Bury highlighted a chilling admission from Baker’s past, noting that Baker had confessed to the probation service that he would have raped the young girl had he not been interrupted by a school caretaker. Described as a “dangerous offender” with a very high risk of serious harm to children, Baker’s recent crimes also included failing to disclose his aliases to the police and using a false name to visit another sex offender in prison.
Baker was handed a five-year custodial sentence with an additional three-year extended license period. Under the terms of this extended sentence, he must serve at least two-thirds of the five years (approximately 40 months) before he can even apply to the Parole Board for release. The judge noted that the severity of the sentence was necessary to protect the public from a man who systematically groomed children and willfully violated court orders designed to restrict his behaviour.
As a result of his persistent offending and the danger he poses to minors, Baker remains on the Sex Offenders Register for life. His indefinite SHPO remains in force, legally prohibiting him from accessing the internet at home or contacting children. Official monitoring is conducted by Humberside Police under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA). These powers allow authorities to maintain permanent surveillance of his residency and digital activity, ensuring that any further breach of his strict notification requirements results in immediate re-arrest and a return to custody.
