An Ashburton paedophile child molester, Jason Moa, sentenced to 35 months in prison for sexual offences against a minor has been advised to progress and utilise all rehabilitative resources available to him while inside.

Jason Moa was convicted at a jury trial earlier this year and appeared before Judge Campbell Savage in the Timaru District Court on May 9 for sentencing on two charges of sexual violation by unlawful connection and a representative charge of indecent act on a minor.

The Ashburton man’s offence transpired on January 14, 2023.

When questioned about the charges several days later, Jason Moa refuted the claim of sexually assaulting the victim, asserting he would never engage in such behaviour, albeit he had limited recollection of the events.

“You were 21 at the time … quite often the court sees girls offended against by people in their 30s and 40s, and that’s much worse than what you did [WHAT A LOAD OF SHITE]. So that tempers the element of vulnerability in my view,” Judge Savage said.

“The crown says that she will suffer harm. I see their submission as being somewhat generic as the victim didn’t wish to file a victim impact statement, and there’s nothing before the court outlining any particular consequences for her.”

The judge said that the fact there were repeated violations, “albeit in a short space of time, in my view warrant a starting point of 3½ years”.

“You had the opportunity after the first violation to have a good think about what you had done, and you chose to go back and do it again.”

The judge said there was nothing inherently bad about Jason Moa, the defendant. [APART FROM RAPING CHILDREN AND LYING]

“I certainly hope that when this is all over that you move on and achieve the potential that you’ve got, but you’ve got to be held to account for what it was that you did that night.”

Judge Savage said Jason Moa had rehabilitative prospects, but said his “attitude and continuing denial suggests that you’re not likely to be receptive to any intervention at this stage”.

He allowed a 15% reduction for previous good character and relative youth for a final sentence of two years 11 months imprisonment.

The judge said Jason Moa would be added to the child sex register.

“Put this behind you, take advantage of anything that you can get in prison, because when you get out, you’re still going to be a young man, and you’ve got a lot of living to do.

“Deal with it please,” Judge Savage said.
