In 2019, the Offender Database reported that James Major, then 40, of Brereton Avenue, Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, was sentenced to four years in prison at Grimsby Crown Court. Major, a bullying drug addict, committed a vile act of child cruelty by forcing his 12-year-old son to ingest potentially lethal methadone and sedative tablets. The horrific incident occurred because Major wanted to use the child’s urine to fool a drug-testing assessment, attempting to hide his ongoing use of Class A substances to qualify for a specific treatment course.
The court heard how James Major crushed the heroin-substitute tablets into his son’s blackcurrant juice. When the boy was reluctant, Major initially cajoled him by calling him “mate,” but quickly turned violent and threatening, vowing to break the child’s legs if he told anyone. After being forced to drink the dangerous concoction and provide a urine sample, the boy fell down a flight of stairs and was found sprawled at the bottom. He was rushed to the hospital feeling “groggy,” “lethargic,” and “unresponsive” due to the life-threatening effects of the chemicals.
Prosecutor Nigel Clive detailed the callous nature of the defendant, who claimed the boy was simply “milking it” while his life was in jeopardy. Medical experts noted that the drugs administered could have caused a heart attack or respiratory failure, leading Judge John Thackray QC to remark that Major could easily have faced a homicide charge. The judge described James Major’s actions as “deplorable” and “despicable,” stating that he had abused the privilege of fatherhood for his own sickening personal benefit.
As a result of his conviction for child cruelty, James Major was jailed for four years. The court heard he had 25 previous convictions, including multiple offences involving violence. He will be managed by the National Probation Service and Humberside Police upon his release to ensure the safety of his family and the public. Any further predatory or violent behaviour toward children in Cleethorpes, Grimsby, or the wider Lincolnshire area will result in his immediate recall to prison.
